"Yesterday, Today, and Forever: Christ's Sovereignty in Our Healing"

Hebrews 13:8

"Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever."

The only way we can persevere in true faith is by holding fast to the foundation of our hope—Jesus Christ. When we cling to Him, we are anchored in truth and wisdom. But without Christ, no matter how much we might think we understand about life, the world, or even the universe, it all amounts to emptiness. For in Christ are found all the treasures of heavenly wisdom. (Col. 2:3)

This is a powerful truth: the only way to truly live wisely is by fixing all our thoughts, our hope, and our trust on Christ alone. He is the unchanging cornerstone of our faith.

The writer of Hebrews was speaking to the Jewish people, reminding them that Christ has always reigned with the same authority He has today. Jesus is not just a figure of the New Testament; He has existed from the beginning of time and has always held sovereign power. “The same,” the author says, “yesterday, today, and forever.” With these words, we are reminded that Christ, who revealed Himself to the world, had already been reigning long before. Yesterday refers to the entire time of the Old Testament, and even now, as the gospel has been made known, we are assured that Christ will never change.

Christ was revealed to the world for the purpose of making Himself known forever. He has no beginning or end, no change in His character or purpose. He is constant and faithful.

For the man seeking freedom from addiction, this is incredibly encouraging. In a world that is always changing—where circumstances, emotions, and even our own strength waver—Christ remains the same. He is our rock, our foundation, and the source of true healing. Addiction tries to bind us in darkness, leading us to chase fleeting comforts that leave us empty. But Christ offers something infinitely better: complete liberation from the bondage of sin.

He is the unchanging Savior who invites us to look to Him, to rely fully on His power and grace. His sovereignty means He is always in control, always able to save, always ready to heal. Christ’s love for us is so great that, even though He exists beyond time and space, He chooses to dwell in our hearts. He does this not to limit Himself—because nothing can contain Him—but to free us. His presence brings true freedom. In Him, there is no condemnation, only the promise of new life and complete restoration.

So if you're struggling with addiction, or any form of bondage, know this: Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. He never changes. While everything else in life is in a state of flux, Christ remains constant. His power to heal, redeem, and set you free is the same as it has always been. Trust in His sovereignty. Fix your eyes on Him, and you will find freedom that is eternal, powerful, and unshakable. Christ, our unchanging Savior, has come to liberate us—His beloved children.
