Recovery Begins in the Heart.

One of the biggest mistakes recovering addicts make is believing their problem is primarily their behavior. We tend to focus on the acting out, the drinking, the pornography, the drugs, the lies, the affairs, the anger, or whatever destructive behavior has brought pain into our lives. But Scripture teaches that our deepest problem is not our behavior—it is our heart.

Jesus said that what comes out of a man proceeds from within (Mark 7:21-23). Addiction is not simply a problem of temptation, environment, stress, loneliness, or opportunity. Those things may trigger us, but they do not create our sin. They simply reveal what is already happening in our hearts.

The Bible uses the word heart to describe the center of who we are. It is where our desires, thoughts, motivations, affections, and worship reside. The heart is the control center of life. We do what we do because we desire what we desire. We pursue what we believe will satisfy us. Every addiction is ultimately a worship problem before it is a behavior problem.

This is why lasting recovery cannot be found merely through willpower, accountability software, avoiding certain places, changing routines, or making promises to ourselves. Those things can be helpful tools, but they cannot transform the heart. A man can change his habits for a season and still carry the same desires, fears, idols, and wounds within him.

Many recovering addicts spend years trapped in a cycle of guilt and shame. They fail, feel terrible, make new promises, try harder, and then fail again. But guilt and shame do not possess the power to transform anyone. Beating yourself up cannot heal you. Self-condemnation cannot set you free.

The good news of the Gospel is that Jesus came to do what we cannot do for ourselves. He forgives sinners. He breaks chains. He changes hearts. He gives new desires and new affections. Real recovery is not simply learning how to stop acting out; it is learning how to run to Christ.

When temptation comes, run to Christ. When you fail, run to Christ. When shame overwhelms you, run to Christ. When loneliness, fear, anger, or discouragement rise up within you, run to Christ. Run to Him for forgiveness. Run to Him for strength. Run to Him for wisdom. Run to Him for transformation.

Freedom is not found in trying harder to become a different man. Freedom is found in surrendering daily to the One who can make you a new man. Never stop running to the grace of Jesus. His grace is greater than your addiction, greater than your failures, and greater than your past. Keep running to Him until the day He brings you home, where the battle with sin will finally be over forever.
